Next up in our ongoing #DeepThoughts series, we accomplish a couple of big things. First, we finally get Jay Ellis to say ‘pianist’. Even written out, it’s funny in an 8th-grade sort of way. Secondly, we establish that great music and great beer are the two pillars of happiness.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
That my son prefers listening to the Beatles and Bob Dylan over pop music (I realize that this could change tomorrow). Most would say that a father’s job is to make sure their kids are productive citizens of the world but they’re wrong. A father’s most important job is to make sure their kids root for their favorite sports teams and that they appreciate music icons (dad’s choice).
What is your favorite occupation?
Like if any occupation is on the table? If so, that’s easy, pro ball player. Middle infield. Bat 2nd. Not that I’ve thought about this.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Beer. I’m shocked at how much I’m willing to spend on an amazing bottle of beer and how little I’m willing to spend on life’s necessities.
What is your greatest regret?
Not voting twice in the last election.
Which talent would you most like to have?
Playing piano and/or guitar. Why did I ever stop playing at age 18? However, I did buy my wife a keyboard for Christmas but it’s secretly for me. I’m going to be a pianist by the time I die. I promise.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Not knowing who you can trust.
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
Owen Meany. Closely followed by Frodo Baggins.
